The Origins
2013 – 2014 · The birth of a crazy idea
It all starts with a simple conviction: the Alpine lakes are among the most beautiful bodies of water in the world, yet no one had turned them into a playground for stand up paddling. The Alpine Lakes Tour was born from this obvious truth — and a healthy dose of madness. Here is the story of its first two years.
The first season
It all begins on June 16, 2013, on the municipal beach of Sévrier, on the shores of Lake Annecy. The Crazy Paddle Games — a name as offbeat as the ambition — bring together a handful of enthusiasts for what will become the very first race of the Alpine Lakes Tour. Benoît Mouren, founder and soul of the project, doesn’t know it yet, but he has just lit a fuse that will burn for over a decade.
La saison s’emballe. Sept étapes, sept plans d’eau, sept caractères différents. Jérôme Alberto et son club ouvrent les portes du lac de Serre-Ponçon début juillet. Puis c’est Chens-sur-Léman, petite commune de Haute-Savoie nichée sur la rive française du lac Léman, fin juillet. Début août, le circuit traverse la frontière pour une première étape suisse au Tropical Corner de Genève, sur le lac Léman. Puis le massif du Beaufortain avec l’étape de Roselend — un lac de barrage suspendu dans la montagne, sévère et magnifique. Fin septembre, la Translac sur le lac du Bourget en Savoie. Et pour finir, en guise de bonus improvisé : le lac des Confins, à La Clusaz, le 14 octobre.

Au total : 350 participants réunis sur 7 étapes. Un succès au-delà des espérances pour une première année. La communauté SUP alpine a trouvé son rendez-vous.

L’expansion — et la naissance de la GlaGla
Janvier 2014. L’hiver bat son plein sur le lac d’Annecy. Benoît Mouren a une nouvelle idée folle : organiser une course en plein hiver, au départ de NCY SUP à Sévrier. Sans grande communication, sans structure lourde. Juste une invitation lancée à la communauté. 40 participants répondent présent, venus de toute la France. Ils n’avaient jamais vécu ça — pagayer en janvier, sous le froid, avec le sourire. La GlaGla Race est née.

Pour le circuit estival, l’ambition monte d’un cran : 11 étapes au programme, de fin avril à début novembre. Le coup d’envoi est donné le 26 avril au lac des Confins (La Clusaz) — lac encore partiellement gelé. C’est là que deux frères font leur entrée remarquée dans le circuit : Jérémy et Ludovic Teulade. Premiers pas en compétition, premières victoires. Une fratrie qui allait marquer l’histoire du tour.

La saison se clôture le 2-3 novembre sur le Canal de Savières, 11e et dernière étape. 46 concurrents sous un ciel automnal. Philippe Lachenal remporte le général, Virginie Samson s’impose une deuxième année consécutive chez les femmes. La machine est lancée.
